Manufacturing hiring continued upward in August

Developing Updated September 18, 2026 · High confidence

What changed

Manufacturing employment increased by about 16,000 jobs in August and is up 58,000 from a recent low in December 2025. Machinery manufacturing added about 6,000 jobs and fabricated-metal product manufacturing added another 6,000.

That is a real improvement after a weak period, but it does not mean every subsector is hiring at the same pace.

Why it matters

Adding workers can help throughput when labor is the constraint. It can also hurt margin when headcount arrives before orders turn into production. Skilled jobs often have long training curves, so waiting until a bottleneck is severe can be expensive too.

What it means for your business

Track direct labor hours per good unit, overtime, scrap, schedule attainment and backlog per production employee. If late orders and overtime are concentrated at one work center, hire or cross-train there instead of adding broad headcount.

Before adding a shift, model the volume needed to cover supervision, maintenance and support costs as well as operator wages.

What to watch

Watch employment in your subsector and your own labor efficiency. The best case for hiring is a persistent bottleneck backed by profitable orders.
